ROCKAWAY BAYBERRY

x

beeswax taper candles

tied with one gilded water caltrop

The Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica) is a local native species, growing along the coastline here in New York City and beyond. Berries were gathered after the first frost in Autumn 2025.

Beeswax is from the efforts of an established bee rescue mission turned family business. Started in 1986, Richard Lercari continues the legacy by offering premier uncut comb from Cherry Valley, New York. Purchased Straight From The Hive, at Honeyfest 2025.

The story of Woo is a tradition to welcome in the good. Turn off the bulbs, and light one candle on a siginificant holiday eve, such as New Years, and allow it to burn all the way down. Keep both candles, or cut one loose and share the hope.

Details Taper candles are handmade with 60% babyberry wax + 40% culinary grade beeswax for stability, and a 100% cotton wick. Candles are non-uniform. Each candle is 6 inches, maintains a clean burn (smokeless), and drips like a dream with an enchanting flame. Offered only as a pair, tied with one gilded water caltrop ornament. Candles are wrapped with archival tissue.

OYSTER SHELL

x

Beeswax Candles

The Oyster shells are an assorted collection from Long Island oyster farmers. I began collecting them in 2021, and until this project they formed the lining of a hole that acts as a bowl for catching rain water in my garden. Future shell offerings are fossil-like varieties gathered along the coast.

Beeswax is from the efforts of an established bee rescue mission turned family business. Started in 1986, Richard Lercari continues the legacy by offering premier uncut comb from Cherry Valley, New York. Purchased Straight From The Hive, at Honeyfest 2025.

Details Candles are handmade with 100% culinary grade beeswax (keep the melted wax and use it this winter) and 100% cotton wick. All candles vary in size and depth, and will require a balancing object to keep them level, such as a Water Caltrop loosie. Candles are wrapped with archival tissue and tied with one gilded Water Caltrop.

WATER CALTROPS

x

gilded with liquid gold, brass, copper or silver

Water Caltrops (Trapa natans) were brought to the U.S. in 1874 by a Harvard Botonist, and spread into rivers and ponds by gardener Louis Guerineau and pals. Currently, water caltrops are an aggressive aquatic invasive species. To rectify this action, ecologists work to remove the plants. Some seed pods detach, wash down river to the atlantic ocean, and onto the shore.

The story of Woo goes that placing a pod over doors and windows will resist any entry by unwanted entities.

Details (2025) These offerings were washed and liquid gilded with real copper in honor of the discontinuation of the penny. They seem rose gold in appearance.

A year round ornament and keepsake, gilded pods are light weight and should be cared for as any other precious art object.
